What are orthodontic appliances?

Orthodontic appliances are available to correct minor crowding of the the teeth for children. As well as breaking habits which develop during growth such as thumb sucking. tongue thrusting, tongue lisping. etc. it is used in the early phases of treatment as well as the with the end phase. The most common is the Hawleys retainer. We also have a palatal expander which expands the arch to provide for space for the erupting teeth. It is for effective for children younger than 13 years old because active bone growth takes place before it reach 13.
